The competition is open between 1 June 2011 and 9 Oct 2011 only, to all undergraduate and postgraduate students from any degree discipline, in the academic year which commences in September 2011, who are studying at a university in the UK and who hold a valid passport.
The minimum age for entrants is 18 years old as at 1 September 2011. All the members of a team must be from the same university.
In the absence of any negligence of the Promoter, entry to and participation in, any stage of the competition is entirely at each entrant’s risk.
To enter, students should form a team of 4 and create a 3 to 5 minute DVD identifying a project: an event or activity, which they can organise, which encourages people in their local community to live in a more energy sustainable manner (“the Project”). The team of 4 students must be those who create the DVD submitted and the entry must be original. The team will need to select a team captain.
Multiple teams from a single university can submit an entry, but:
• each team may only submit one entry
• a student cannot be involved in more than one team
• RWE Npower plc (“npower”) reserves the right to exercise its discretion so that only one team from a university will be selected for the shortlist
• by entering the competition the teams confirm that they will be available to attend, if selected, the (Location tbc) weekend of 21 to 23 October 2011 and, if selected, the Arctic trip, which is expected to take place in early April 2012.
All teams should pre-register their interest, via email, before 5pm, 1 September 2011, by completing the form at
http://www.npower.com/futureleaders
The Project submission must be submitted on a DVD, in Quick Time format and uncompressed, and have a maximum duration of no more than 5 minutes. The DVD must be clearly labelled with the team name, the university name and the Project title. Teams must complete the online application form. The declaration form (see below) and a photo of the team must be submitted with each DVD entry. Teams will be required (at the appropriate stage of the competition) to submit a declaration form, signed by all the relevant students, to confirm that their entries are all their own work. Closing date for receipt of entries is 5pm, 9 October 2011. All entries are subject to verification.
The completed declaration form, DVD and photo must be posted to: Kerry Riley, npower Future Leaders Challenge, RWE Npower plc, Trigonos, Windmill Hill Business Park, Whitehill Way, Swindon SN5 6PB
Responsibility cannot be accepted by npower for lost, delayed or damaged entries. Proof of posting is not proof of receipt. Any entry which is not received by npower on or before the closing time and date for entries will be excluded from the competition.
Incomplete, illegible or altered entries and any not in accordance with the entry instructions and/or terms and conditions will be invalid and any such entry will be excluded from the competition.
Entries will not be returned. Title to and copyright in the entry will pass to npower on its receipt of the entry and npower may publish, reproduce or copy entries in any medium to promote the competition and/or other climate change/sustainability initiatives. Teams should therefore ensure that they also keep a copy of their entry for reference.
Judging – Stage 1
Once entry to the competition closes at 5pm, on 9 October 2011, valid entries will be sorted and judged. The judges will select a shortlist of 8 teams. The shortlisted 8 teams which progress to the next stage will be those whose Projects:
• are the most original / creative
• most effectively identify an environmental issue within their local community
• best describe what the students intend to do to make a positive difference to the environment and how they will engage their university and the local community to achieve this
• look the most achievable in time and budget
The final 8 teams will be chosen at the absolute discretion of the judging panel, whose decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into as to the outcome of its decision. Winning teams will be notified by 5 pm, on 14 October 2011.
On selection, each of the 8 teams selected will be given a cheque for £400.00 to put towards the costs of running their Project. The cheque will be made payable to the team captain and sent out within 14 days of 14 October 2011. In addition, teams will receive npower hooded tops.
All 8 teams are required to attend an outward bound weekend held at (location tbc) from 21 October 2011 to 23 October 2011.
Please note that all the teams and the winners will be representing this campaign and therefore may be required to participate in promoting the campaign and provide their feedback.
Details of the successful teams will be available by sending a S.A.E to Kerry Riley, npower Future Leaders Challenge, RWE Npower plc, Trigonos, Windmill Hill Business Park, Whitehill Way, Swindon SN5 6PB, from Friday 14 October 2011, for a minimum period of 28 days.
The weekend at (location tbc)
The 8 shortlisted teams will participate in an outward bound weekend (location tbc) from 21 October 2011 to 23 October 2011. Teams are expected to make their own travel arrangements to [location]; there will be an undisclosed prize awarded to the team which uses the cheapest method and leaves the least carbon footprint. Validation of the trip will need to be provided, together with appropriate documentation to support their journey costs. Travel expenses will be reimbursed by npower, up to a maximum £150.00 per team, on production of relevant, original receipts and supporting documentation. npower will pay for the accommodation and the activities during the weekend, which are provided as part of this competition.
A judge will be present during the weekend and will take into account how the students perform when later making the final selection of the teams that will travel to the Arctic. The judge will be looking for a commitment to climate change and all-round team players, not simply the fastest or fittest teams.
Next Step –the Project
The 8 teams have until 6 December 2011 to implement their Projects and film their activities. The closing date for receipt of final DVDs is 5pm, Wednesday 6 December 2011. The final Project submission must be submitted on a DVD in Quick Time format and uncompressed and have a maximum duration of no more than 5 minutes. The DVD must be clearly labelled with the team name, the university name and the Project title.
Completed final entries should be sent to: Kerry Riley, npower Future Leaders Challenge, RWE Npower plc, Trigonos, Windmill Hill Business Park, Whitehill Way, Swindon, SN5 6PB, together with a signed declaration, signed by all the team members, to confirm that the students did all the work on the Project themselves and that their work is original.
Responsibility cannot be accepted by npower for lost, delayed or damaged entries. Proof of posting is not proof of receipt. Entries that are not received by npower on or before the final entry deadline will be excluded from the final part of the competition. Incomplete, illegible or altered entries and any not in accordance with the entry instructions and/or terms and conditions are invalid and any such entry will be excluded from the competition.
Entries will not be returned. Title to and copyright in the final entries will pass on their receipt to npower and npower may publish, reproduce or copy entries in any medium to promote the competition and/or other climate change/sustainability initiatives. Teams should therefore ensure that they keep a copy of their entry for reference.
Please note that winners of this stage of the competition will be representing this campaign and will be asked to participate in promoting the campaign and providing their feedback
Judging the Final Entries – Stage 2
Final entry to the competition closes at 5pm, Tuesday 6 December 2011. On Friday 9 December 2011, the npower Future Leaders Final will take place (location to be confirmed) to which all 8 teams and guests (as applicable) will attend.
Teams are expected to make their own travel arrangements; there will be an undisclosed prize awarded to the team which uses the cheapest method and leaves the least carbon footprint. Validation of the trip will need to be provided, together with appropriate documentation to support their journey costs. Travel expenses will be reimbursed by npower, up to a maximum £150 per team, on production of relevant original receipts and supporting documentation.
Each team’s 5 minute DVD will be screened, showcasing their Project and detailing the impact their Project has had on the local community, before the winners are announced. The winning team will be going dog sledding to the land of the midnight sun, the Arctic, in early April 2012.
The Projects will be judged by a panel of judges (whose names are available upon request), one of whom will be independent and not associated with either npower or GTI Media Ltd. The Projects will be judged on the teams’ performance at the outward bound weekend and the success of their Projects, based on which Project:
• had the greatest positive impact on the environment
• most effectively engaged their university, local community and peers
• was innovative and creative.
The winning team will be chosen at the absolute discretion of the judging panel, whose decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into as to its decision.
The Prize
The 4 student members of the winning team will win a place on the dog sledding expedition to the Arctic, provided by Across the Divide, in early April 2012. Participants will fly to and from Alta in Northern Norway, via Oslo, from the UK.
npower will pay the costs of:
• return economy flights for the 4 team members from the UK to Alta
• 4 places on the dog sledding expedition provided by Across the Divide
• providing the 4 members of the winning team with a thermal layer and down filled jacket, but participants will be expected to obtain, at their own expense, clothing items and equipment, as set out in the Across the Divide Clothing and Gear List.
Any further costs incurred i.e. transfers to and from a UK airport must be paid for by the students.
All travel documentation will need to be provided by the participants, including any required by Across the Divide’s terms and conditions, in sufficient time to make the necessary reservations.
Important – please note!
By entering the competition the teams confirm that they will, if selected, be available to attend the following:
• Outward Bound weekend 21 – 23 October 2011
• The Final Friday 9 December 2011 – location to be confirmed
• The trip to the Arctic Early April 2012
npower reserves the right to exclude a team in the event that any team, or its team members, bring the competition, or any element of it, or npower, or any other party connected with the competition, into disrepute.
Increasing employability is one of the aims of the competition and, by entering this competition, participants consent to permitting npower to contact them in relation to any employment opportunities it may deem appropriate. Individuals on the successful teams could e.g. be considered for npower’s graduate schemes, commencing in September 2012.
The final prize, a trip to the Arctic in 2012 for the winning team of 4, is provided by Across the Divide and is subject to the terms and conditions required by that company. Full details of those terms and conditions will be provided to the 8 short listed teams.
A summary of certain important information regarding the Arctic prize is included at the end of these terms and conditions, although such information may be subject to change. Across the Divide will require each member of the prize winning team to provide certain information to it (which will include personal data) and to agree to the terms, conditions and requirements imposed by Across the Divide.
The members of the successful team consent to npower passing on team member names, and any other personal data it may have, to Across the Divide for the purpose of their participation in this prize.
The Arctic expedition needs strong characters and committed individuals, able to work as part of a wider team. Participants will need a high level of fitness and the physical ability to participate in the activities envisaged in the environment of the Arctic. Throughout the expedition team members will also be fully responsible for their own team of 4-6 huskies, so it is essential that participants like dogs and have no allergies to fur.
The Promoter accepts no responsibility in connection with the provision of the final prize by Across the Divide.
By its very nature, the first prize trip to the Arctic may be subject to change and cancellation, due to events beyond the control of npower. npower has no responsibility for any costs, losses or expenses incurred as a result of any such change or cancellation. If the winning team is unable to attend the trip following such change or cancellation, npower reserves the right to substitute the winning team with another participating team. If an individual team member from the winning team is unable to attend the trip following such change or cancellation, the team can substitute the team member for another member but only one substitution can be made per team.
The Promoter is RWE Npower plc (Company registration number 3892782). Registered office Windmill Hill Business Park, Whitehill Way, Swindon SN5 6PB.
No cash alternatives to:
a) participation in any part of this competition; or

npower shall not be liable for injury, death, loss or damage suffered by a participant, whether or not caused by any act or omission of npower or any of its servants, agents, contractors or by any other entrant or participant or by Across the Divide Limited (or any of their servants, agents, contractors).
npower shall not be liable for any uninsured losses, baggage or other property; nor for any indirect or consequential losses, damages or expenses; nor for loss of time, enjoyment or inconvenience; nor for any illness, injury or death sustained during the competition or its prize trips.
npower does not exclude liability for death or personal injury arising from its own negligence.

Terms and Conditions
Important information regarding travel to the Arctic Circle.
This information is subject to change. Full terms and conditions will be issued to the winning team after the Final on 9 December 2011 and they will need to be read, understood and signed by each member of the winning team in advance of the Arctic trip, as required by Across the Divide Limited, a company registered in England and Wales whose registered office is at Thorncombe Barn, Fore Street, Thorncombe, Chard, Somerset, UK, TA20 4PP (CRN 3279836).
Important information from these terms and conditions is as follows:
This expedition is a physical and tough challenge. Participants will be provided with a sled and team of 4 huskies and will make their way, led by a local guide and Expedition leader, through the wilds of the Arctic Circle under extremely cold conditions. Fitness and teamwork between participants and their dogs will determine their ability to successfully complete the challenge.
This trip runs over seven days in the Finnmark region of Norway. The trip will cover approximately 200 kilometres in total, crossing through forested areas, then into open plains of snow before returning to a base at Gargia for a celebratory meal. As there is no time difference between the UK and Norway participants will be expected to commence the trip as soon as they arrive. Participants will therefore need to train and be physically prepared for this event. There are some very steep inclines on this trip – participants are expected to help their dogs by dismounting their sleds and pushing them as they run alongside the dogs, easing the dogs’ burden as they run up these steep sections.
Participants could also find themselves travelling in extreme conditions – with snow; blizzards and low visibility, requiring skill and concentration to steer the dogs and keep up with the group. Aside from the daily sledding activities, participants will be expected to look after their own teams of dogs - feeding, watering and cleaning up in the morning. Everyone involved must take their turn in preparing and cooking supper, cleaning dishes and fetching drinking and cleaning water.
Accommodation during the trip will be in a hotel on the first and final nights and in lodges for the remainder. The lodges/cabins are all well furnished, with good beds and one with an adjoining sauna. All cabins are heated by wood burners. Washing facilities during the event will be very basic. Facilities vary – some lodges have showers, one has a sauna whilst others have no running water, so cold water must be collected from a stream for washing. There are long drop toilets on site at each lodge.
Kit List:
Participants will be expected to obtain clothing items and equipment as set out in the Across the Divide Clothing and Gear List.
npower will provide the 4 members of the winning team with a thermal layer and down filled jacket.
In addition participants are advised to bring with them approximately £200.00 in Norwegian Kroner, to cover incidentals and personal purchases which will not be paid for by npower..
Special requests and Health requirements:
The standard of healthcare in Norway is high. Under the terms of the EEA Regulations, participants are covered for emergency treatment whilst visiting Norway. If participants hold a British or EU passport they should obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving the UK. Please note that the EHIC is not a substitute for medical and travel insurance, but does entitle the participants to emergency medical treatment on the same terms as Norwegian nationals. However, participants will not be covered for medical repatriation, on-going medical treatment or treatment of a non-urgent nature. Participants are asked to check that routine childhood vaccinations, such as polio, tetanus, typhoid and diphtheria are up to date.
Participants who have any special requests should inform Across the Divide who will then advise the relevant supplier of the requirements, but it cannot guarantee that such requests will be met. Furthermore, Across the Divide has no liability to participants if such requests are not met.
Participants will be supplied with a medical form which they are required to complete and return to Across the Divide. Participants must notify Across the Divide of any medical problems or disabilities. If any medical problems or disabilities are suffered or arise before the departure date, participants must notify Across the Divide immediately. Across the Divide reserves the right to decline or cancel a booking if:
• any medical problem or disability is disclosed to Across the Divide on the medical questionnaire
• any medical problem or disability is disclosed to Across the Divide after the medical questionnaire has been submitted but before the departure date or
• any medical problem or disability is not disclosed
• and such medical problem or disability would or might affect the participant’s health and safety whilst on the trip, or the health and safety of anyone else participating in the trip.
It is the participants’ responsibility to ensure that they are medically fit enough to undertake the trip. Unless informed otherwise in writing, Across the Divide will assume that participants are in good health and are not aware of any reason why they may be unsuited to taking part in the trip.
Delay, change of itinerary or cancellation:
It is unlikely that Across the Divide will need to make any changes to the planned trip but, if they have to do so, they reserve the right to do so at any time. Across the Divide also reserves the right, in any circumstances, to cancel the trip. In the event of a major change to the trip, participants will be informed as soon as reasonably possible if there is time before the departure date.
Travel Insurance
Participants must carry individual travel insurance to take part in the event. Across the Divide offers a comprehensive and competitively priced policy which provides the required amount of cover. If a participant does not wish to take out the Across the Divide insurance they must supply written proof that they are insured and that their policy provides adequate cover for this type of event. Further information about Across the Divide’s insurance policy is available on request.
Participants should be in possession of a valid passport and, if it is not a British passport, must check any visa requirements. Whilst no minimum validity is required participants must ensure that their passports are valid for the return journey. Norway does not require visas for British and EU passport holders.
No cash alternatives to:
a) participation in any part of this competition; or
b) any of its prizes are available.
Across the Divide excludes any liability if the prize trip or any part of the competition is cancelled for any reason.
Across the Divide shall not be liable for injury, death, loss or damage suffered by a participant whether or not caused by any act or omission of Across the Divide or any of its servants, agents, contractors or by any other entrant or participant or by npower (or any of their servants, agents, contractors).
Across the Divide shall not be liable for any uninsured losses, baggage or other property; nor for any indirect or consequential losses, damages or expenses; nor for loss of time, enjoyment or inconvenience; nor for any illness, injury or death sustained during the competition or its prize trips.
Across the Divide does not exclude liability for death or personal injury arising from its own negligence
